Things to fix for conference
So far my paper is coming along nicely. There are a few things I need to go over such as using more quotes, citing them properly. Completing the assigned work given today, highlighting key sentences. Also, I need to correct the little mistakes, like grammar, spelling, etc. Also, my ani. bib. needs some work with organization, and correctly citing, hanging indent.

how it's going
In class today I start and almost finished my intro and conclusion, I like the way they came out, but at the same time I know they need more work. Over all, my body needs more work, so I plan on spending time working on that.

plans for the week
So I actually have a lot written so far, I'm on page 3 and there is still tons for me to write about, so far I've just summarized from the sources I've gathered, so i haven't added quotes or any direct evidence from my sources, without plagiarising. Tomorrow I plan on doing that, incorporating quotes and citations into my current draft, and also re-do the section on where I interviewed my father, and to continue working on the body of my paper.

Monday's workshop
As an immigrant from another country arriving here in the United States, the first thing on their mind is becoming a citizen. Often times though, they don’t know what they’re getting themselves into. Things such as having to put money aside to pay for the process, dealing with the discrimination, and the long waiting periods for them to actually become a citizen are but a few main concerns that hold hundreds of immigrants back from going through with the process.
1. There are many immigrants that want to become citizens, to them it means not living in fear of being deported, having children and not having to worry about them being held back because they’re parents aren’t citizens. Many children who were born here take for granted how much of an advantage they have just by being a citizen of this country, and don’t really take the time to think about it. Things such as enrolling in school, (read more on that) getting a license, and having your parents’ co sign a loan for college, are a few things kids who have illegal parents can not do.
2. Having to deal with any that encompasses lots of money is always an issue for many American citizens. Imagine coming here with very little money and the government tells you to fork over about three hundred dollars to become a citizen. Blank stares and shocked looks are the first things that come to mind. Lets think about this for a second. If an immigrant is migrating front he homeland, what are possible reasons, knowing there are more opportunities here, making a better life for their family, getting a good job, and more importantly making more money, now I’m not one to stereotype but please lets face it many immigrants coming here are poor, they’re coming here to better themselves and their families, how are they going to get together this amount of money. If they can get together three hundred dollars that money is going to go towards paying for rent, food, or clothes.

Annotated Bibliography feedback
So I just got back my reviews, and I did alright, but that isn't great. I mostly had "good and satisfactory" comments. Things that I still have to correct are small grammar mistakes, organization, and adding a sixth source. I didn't add the sixth because I plan to have it be an interview with someone going through the immigration process, which will greatly help my essay.

final ani intro
Annotated Bibliography: Examining the citizenship process that isn’t so effective.Introduction: The ideal question for my research paper would be: Why the citizenship process isn’t as effective as it could be. I’m gearing this paper more towards fellow undergraduate students, yet at the same time including people who are interested in knowing how exactly the citizenship process works. The information I’ve gathered thus far shows how these immigrants are being badly treated when trying to become a citizen, and how many decide not to become one because the process takes too long, and costs too much and are not financially able to pay.
Over all, the consensus is to “ease up” on how harsh the current process is, make it more affordable for immigrants that are trying to become citizens, and speed the process up. Easier said then done, of course. The body of my paper will discuss currently the process steps, and how they’re making many citizens not want to go through with it. Also the harsh reality on how citizens are being treated when they opt to go through with it. I will then conclude my paper with different methods that have been suggested to change the citizenship process but haven’t been in forced yet. If these ways were just taken into consideration the reaction to the immigrant population would be astounding, more and more immigrants would come forward and finally be able to become citizens.
(NOTE: figure out exactly who says what and incorporate some information from what the authors are saying, make it sound more credible.)

intro 4 anni in the progress
My purpose for this research paper is to bring attention to undergraduate students who are interested about current events and the way the government is treating incoming immigrants. It’s nothing new, centuries ago immigrants were being sent through multiple stations before they could enter into America, but after that they were in, and that’s where the whole “being treated differently” ended. Over the years it has gotten worse because it doesn’t end with entering into America, it continues up until the day you become a citizen, and that usually takes two to three years, and a few hundred dollars.

The real deal is that becoming a citizen isn’t just some class you take and you’re on your way. It takes time and money, and being treated in a manner no one should ever have to experience.

In this journal article Charles S. Clark talks about how unjust the current policies are restricting immigrants from coming to the United States. Yet the majority consensus is that immigrants shouldn't be allowed to come in so freely. Clark gets into why immigrants are being treated unwell and made to overcome obstacles that no one in there condition could realistically overcome. I plan to incorporate his ideas into my essay as supporting evidence that immigration policies are treating these people as second class citizens simply because of where they come from.

Dianna Solis describes the current bill waiting for Bush’s approval that would make it easier for thousands of highly skilled professionals and millionaires from other nations to get US visas. While this bill only makes it easier for the “better half” of the immigrants getting in it’s a start. And would also break the stereotype that all immigrants are coming here as minimum wage workers. The main parts I plan to use in my essay would be the fact that immigration bills are in the works and are in line to help immigrants come to America easier and legally. This would be the naysayer, since I’m writing about how the immigration process is not effective in helping immigrants become citizen.

My question and primary sources.
Question - To what extent is the citizenship process effective enough for immigrants?
Some primary sources I would consider looking at would be - talking to immigrants living here who are going through the process, possibly those who have opted not to to go through with it, and they're reasons why. I could also use the government website that has books and helps immigrants go through this process.

Where my topic fits in
If I had to pick which role my topic fits under it would be the "Problem-Solving Detective or Critical Analyst." I think this would fit because I'm addressing the issue of immigrants becoming citizens and the long process they go through. And I haven't decided if I think the process is long or if it is a "good process" but I have a feeling I'll find something wrong with it and would want to address what could be fixed in it. Questions for this section would be;
Should we permit immigrants to go through this long process of waiting and money in order for them to become a citizen?
To what extent is this citizenship process a well thought out and effective process?
I also think however if I find that there isn't an issue with the process the paper would fall under the "Synthesizer of Current Best Thinking on a Problem. " This is a more general bringing all information together and stating it all, and could also end up fitting my topic. Questions for this section would be;
What is the general consensus about the process of citizenship?
What is the current view on how hard or easy becoming a citizen is?

Progress Report
So far I've learned a lot about how to go about finding good sources to use for my research paper. You've offered a lot of very helpful information on how to ultimately make the research paper sound good, because it'll be back up by scholarly sources. And with that I've found a few good sources on my topic and how to pick out which sites aren't as creditable as others are.
If I had to say what I still want to know about the research paper focusing more on the library aspect of it and books, my question would be how much information would we have to use from a book to make it a good source. Is it possible to just take a quote from an entire book, or does that mean it shouldn't be used? I haven't gone to the library yet to look at some books, but I do plan on it this weekend, possibly taking notes as well.

Word Search
Some words that I would use as key terms would be the following;
immigration laws
immigration process
citizenship
Potential sources would be;
interviews
surveys
books that contain the law process

My Audience and purpose
I believe that as of right now my main audience would be those who make and approve the immigration laws and set up the process and on a smaller scale those who have to go through the process of becoming a citizen. As for my purpose, I'm not sure exactly how long and how much it costs to go through this process, so if I thought it was was reasonable, I would say my purpose is to focus on why this process is essential for immigrants to go through. But if I find the process isn't reasonable and could be better, then I would say my purpose would be to convince those who make the process shorter, easier, and more appealing to immigrants.

Refining my research topic
Immigration laws, does the process need to be so long?
1. Does making an immigrant wait so long and pay so much, really necessary just to get a piece of paper that says they're a citizen?
2. Why is the process so long, and does it actually benefit immigrants?
3. If the process for becoming a citizen was changed would more immigrants want to become citizens?

Issues for thought on my research paper
Part I: Exploration
1. Identify the issue or problem that you plan to focus on in your research project.
Immigration from Mexico to America is changing America for the better.
2. What is your personal connection to and interest in this topic?
My personal interest in this would be that I’m Mexican and my father immigrated here, and we know extended family friends who have also immigrated here to the United States.
3. What opinions do you already hold about this topic?
I can honestly say I’m on the fence. I see why Mexicans want to come here, to help make a better life for themselves, but at the same time you can’t illegally come and stay here. It’s just not right.
4. What knowledge do you already have about this topic? What are your main questions about this topic? What are you most curious about?
I know that the issue of immigration laws has been in the news rather recently, and that there are such controversial issues with laws. My main question would be if immigration of Mexicans here to America is a good thing not just for them but for America as well. I’m most curious about finding out if immigrants better or take away from society as a whole.
5. Within what scholarly discipline (such as history, biology, psychology) do you expect to do most of your research? How does this discipline approach or study this topic?
I would expect to do most research within history and the patterns over time, oh how many immigrants come and the affect it has on society and what it does for the economy.
6. How could you research this topic outside the library (for example, through interviews and/or observations)?
I could interview my father, and his view on what it means to be allowed to live here. Possibly go to communities that are known for having lots of immigrants and see what it’s really like.
Part I: Exploration
1. Identify the issue or problem that you plan to focus on in your research project.
I would want to focus on this issue of how many people are truly happy with their career choice.
2. What is your personal connection to and interest in this topic?
I know a lot of people who do their job because it makes money, and not because it’s what they want to do everyday. Yet there are people that I do know that enjoy they’re job and don’t like at it as something they have to do yet something they want to do everyday.
3. What opinions do you already hold about this topic?
I think more people are going to work not happy about they’re doing, but are more worried about paying the bills. And it’s sad because I think that your job should be something that you love doing.
4. What knowledge do you already have about this topic? What are your main questions about this topic? What are you most curious about?
I don’t know much other than people are either happy their job and really enjoy waking up every morning, and then there are people who really dread getting out of bed to o to work. My main question would be exactly how many people are happy with their job. It’d be interesting to see why people choose jobs that don’t make them happy.
5. Within what scholarly discipline (such as history, biology, psychology) do you expect to do most of your research? How does this discipline approach or study this topic?
I think I would research more on psychology, but might also look into the history of people being happy with their jobs.
6. How could you research this topic outside the library (for example, through interviews and/or observations)?
I could interview people who work on campus and see if they enjoy their jobs, also around my community if they enjoy what they do. Take a survey of how many people are really happy going to work.

So these are a few sites I found about my topic on obesity, I'm not sure though if it's a good topic. I'm trying to focus on what people think is the real reason as to why people are obese
This article states that the reason as to why so many people are becoming rapidly obese is due to combinations of genetic susceptibility, increased availability of high energy foods and decreased requirement for physical activity. I believe these are good reasons as to why I think people are becoming obese as well.

Blackboards and chalk, or laptops and U.S.B. drives?
Technology is now being integrated in our school systems, and whether that is a good or bad thing is up for grabs. On one side you have Ohmann who thinks that this new way of teaching is a quick rich scam utilized by the government and schools. And Shaffer who feels the use of technology can help generate a good new way of learning. "…Towards a new model of learning through meaningful activity in virtual worlds as preparation for meaningful activity in our postindustrial, technology-rich, real world" (11.) Let’s look at one side of the issue here.
Ohmann sees technology as a means for the government and schools to make a person pay more money for something that really isn’t all that necessary. It’s bad enough that the more money you pay for school the better the degree, what does that show about the way government runs things, money is everything, is the underline story here. Don’t get Ohmann wrong here, technology is a good tool for people to use, and when used correctly it does have it’s great benefits, but when it comes down to it, that cost of all this new and “great” technology isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. "Technological determinism will serve us no better than e-phoria (a new word, meaning the giddy perception of technology as a genie that can bless all our desires” (5.) Ohmann presents a strong argument here, but lets further explore how Shaffer feels.
Contrary to how Ohmann views technology Shaffer sees technology, specifically video games as the new innovative way for students to learn in the classroom. He sees video games as a good way for students to learn about jobs in society and really get to know what it is that they say they want to be one day. He points out that certain games help kids work towards a goal and teach skills needed in the real world. And stresses that writing on the blackboard and taking notes by hand is a thing of the past, and the use of laptops and learning about issues can be taught through games. He feels strongly about the use of video games as a good learning tool, but at the same time he realizes that not all games benefit a child. There are games out there that teach violence and don’t help academically at all, and it’s up to each individual to decide which way is best.
My point here-that technology is a new and useful tool to be used in the classroom-should interest those who think old methods of teaching are better than the current ways. Beyond this limited audience, however, my point should speak to anyone who care about the larger issue of trying to get through to students who don’t always take so easily to taking notes and listening to lectures. A teacher is someone who reaches out to students and helps them understand material, and if the old ways aren’t working they should consider new innovative technology tools.
Over all, I didn’t even have a title, so that was an issue from the get-go. I added one which I thought was appropriate and liked the way it came out. in searching for the uses of metacommentary within this short essay, I was glad to see that it wasn’t hard to pick them out. I found a few that I had written already and of course went back and added a sentence or two to make it more clear what I was trying to get across.

Are you really taking notes in class, or are you just chatting on a.i.m?
In the article "Computers and Technology" by Richard Ohmann, he makes it very clear that integrating the use of computers in the classroom is not all that great of an idea. How it is a great tool to have but at the same time it becomes difficult to set limits on while in class. If students are told to sit in class and pay attention, knowing they have the Internet at their disposal, they're not going to pay attention. Now more than ever students are taking class time to chat online, look at emails, and surf the web, as Ohmann puts it. So originally not only did these students have all the expenses of books, tuition, and other fees, add to the the cost of these computers.
Ohmann focuses on the idea that school costs a lot and everything revolves around money. He talks about tuition, and how it's essentially the amount of money you're giving a school, and in return they give you a credit which works towards a degree that you pay for. And the more money you cough up the more creditable the degree is worth.
I somewhat agree with Ohmann, I get what he's saying the whole, people aren't going to be focusing in class when they can be shopping online, or using aol. But at the same time, it's up to the person to decided how they want to use this opportunity. Do you want to waste your time in class, while you could be learning something valuable? I think that every student has the opportunity to do well in class, and if it's abused then it's their own fault and people as a majority should not have to be penalized for it. When it comes to the whole spending lots of money, I agree with Ohmann, the more you spend the more you degree will help you out. It's the society we live in. I also agree with him in that it's wrong that schooling can cost so much and expenses reach a point where they become ridiculous!

McDonalds or Subway
Fast food restaurants are every where, cheap and fills you up. So no wonder why kids turn to it for multiple meals a day. But at the same time there are so many other places to eat where the food is cheap and healthy. Subway is a perfect example of that, healthy, tasty, and fills you up. Places that aren’t even restaurants such as Walgreens or Jewel, sell healthy snacks that can be substituted for a meal and fill you up. There use to be only so many places to go to when someone needed food fast and cheap, but now there are so many places where you can find healthy and cheap food.
On the contrary it takes time to find places where cheap and healthy places sell food. It takes twice as long to look for a Subway then it does to find a Mcdonalds or Taco Bell. And because of the fact that Subway doesn’t have a drive through it’s faster to go to any other place. I understand why so many people turn to fast food as a quick meal, but to take it a step further and blame them for the reason why you put on so much extra weight is ludicrous. You can’t blame employees for giving you what you ask for. It’s called personal responsibility. Don’t blame others for your own actions. You don’t have to eat that double cheese burger, you can go to a Subway, or grab some fruit from a local deli. So when people say it’s these companies fault for making them fat it’s…well it shouldn’t even be brought up.

Friday's assignment
http://yourbiz.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/08/31/338537.aspx
This article talks about a reporter and how he noticed that there are so many illegal immigrants working, and what the government plans to do about it. The "They Say" in this article is that the government plans to take action about so many illegal immigrants taking the jobs of legal immigrants, the reporter has mixed feelings about it because he does think it is a good idea to give the jobs back to the legal immigrants at the same time though he feels sorry for the companies that employ the use of low waged payed workers.
http://risingfromruin.msnbc.com/2006/05/what_evacuation.html
This article talks about the hurricane Catrina that devastated small towns around the Golf coast, and other areas. It doesn't say the "They Say," instead it gives a likely report of what happened, but could be viewed differently. The reporter says that these towns were doomed from the get go, and not much was done to help these residents. The "They Say" is not implied and this article only addresses one side of the argument, that nothing was done to help these residents get out. The article I think is not that effective because of the fact that not both sides are presented, instead it's one sided and leaves the reader thinking, well there has to be another side of it, what is it, and, how much truth is actually in this article if views from the opposing side are not included?
This blog thing seems kinda fun, it'll be interesting to see if I continue to use it after the semester is done!
